I sometimes get asked for references and tools (free and/or open source oriented) and I decided to compile here the ones I use the most, which I highly recommend for frequent use (so very personal selection).

Considering that this is "work in progress" for the moment, I'm open to any suggestion.

Operating Systems 🐧

Server

Workstation

  • Manjaro (with GNOME) : The advantage of Arch Linux's stability with an easier handling, just install to work 🤓
  • elementary OS : Based on Ubuntu (without Snap package manager), a distribution that will remind a lot macOS™ without its locks
  • Pop! OS : Also based on Ubuntu (and still without Snap), I use it mainly for multimedia
  • To watch, the young (but promising) Vanilla OS with a pure GNOME and interesting choices, especially on security

Mobile

  • LineageOS : AOSP version of Android™, works perfectly without Google™ products (and with the F-Droid application store)
  • postmarketOS : Very interesting and dynamic adaptation of Linux with several possible interfaces including GNOME or Plasma
  • Mobian : Mobile adaptation of Debian, slowly but surely progressing …
  • Ubuntu Touch : After the withdrawal of Canonical™, UBports and its community have nicely taken over this mobile version of Ubuntu

Autres

  • ⌚ AsteroidOS : Excellent alternative to Android Wear for connected watches
  • 🕹️ Lakka & Recalbox : Linux distributions dedicated to emulation and retrogaming
  • 📻 Volumio : Local network jukebox solution, installable on a Raspberry Pi™ board
  • 📺 webOS OSE : Project I follow, it's the open source counterpart of the webOS™ bought by LG™

Logiciels

Conception

  • Akira : Projet en développement d'outil de conception UX
  • Minder : Application de cartographie mentale pour organiser et visualiser nos idées

Développement

  • DBeaver : Gestion de base de données multiplateforme (très pratique pour la consultation à la volée)
  • Éditeur de texte GNOME : Éditeur de texte (et plus si affinités) pour GNOME (comme indiqué) dont j'ai fait la 1ere traduction française
  • Geany : IDE léger et paramétrable (j'ai d'ailleurs quelques ajouts à vous proposer)
  • Meld : Indispensable pour la comparaison de code et le merge
  • Notepad++ : Autre IDE (sous Windows) avec mon thème sombre DansLeRuSH-Dark inclus depuis la version 7.8.7
  • Seer : Interface graphique pour GNU Projet Debugger (GDB)
  • VSCodium : Pour qui voudrait utiliser Visual Studio Code avec des binaires libres et sans la "télémétrie" de Microsoft™ 🕵️
  • Zowe : Framework open source intégré et extensible pour Mainframe z/OS … intéret professionnel 🤓

Graphisme

  • GIMP : Éditeur bitmap très complet, je l'utilise quasi quotidiennement
  • Goxel : Éditeur voxel, parfait pour empiler les cubes
  • GrafX2 : Un brin rétro mais idéal pour faire du pixel art 👾
  • Inkscape : Très complet (et suivi) éditeur vectoriel, je fais tous mes .svg avec

Internet

  • Firefox : LE navigateur (imparfait certes mais le seul valable)
  • GNOME Web (Epiphany) : Navigateur minimal très pratique (aussi) pour tester WebKit sous Linux
  • Thunderbird : Indispensable client pour les courriels, très pratique dans sa gestion multi-comptes

Réseau

  • RustDesk : Prise en main de bureau à distance pour Linux, macOS, Windows et Android
  • Wireshark : Excellent pour capturer les trames réseaux et surveiller son trafic

Applications Web / Réseaux

Communication

  • BigBlueButton : Visioconférence développé pour la formation à distance, avec présentation de diapositives, tableau blanc et sondages
  • Matrix : Standard ouvert pour communication (chat) interopérable, décentralisée et temps réel (audio/vidéo également)
  • Mattermost : Messagerie instantanée libre, auto-hébergeable et dédiée aux organisations ou entreprises

Conception

  • Penpot : Plate-forme de conception et de prototypage open source

Développement

  • Forgejo : Forge logicielle basée sur Git, dérivée de Gitea™, légère, complète et à jamais communautaire

Multimédia

  • Castopod : Solution très complète d'hébergement de podcast
  • PeerTube : Du streaming vidéo fédéré, en par-à-pair et autohébergé

Sécurité / InfoSec

  • CrowdSec : Fail2Ban collaboratif (identification et partage des adresses IP malveillantes)
  • Pi-Hole : Blocage des publicités au niveau réseau, fonctionne comme un DNS menteur et possiblement en DHCP
